Photoshop/GIMP question...

I use the GIMP though I have Photoshop I just haven't installed it yet, but this question should work for both:

I want to start coloring these black and white drawings, I understand that to color just the white area in a black and white drawing you make a layer underneath the actual drawing and set the drawing layer to Multiply... But what if you want to make the black area in the black and white drawing like green or something? If you set it to multiply and try and color underneath the the green it fucks with the color of the green, if you know what I mean.

How do you get around this? I was thinking of making the black area green, then copy and pasting it over the colored drawing and oh my god I have no idea what the fuck I am talking about.

I am still trying different things to get around this but if someone knows off the top of their head how to do it that would be swell.
